Smoking up a storm at the Cape of Good Hope

Few visitors to Cape Town know about the legend of Devil’s Peak in Cape Town. The story goes that a Dutch man called Jan van Hunks was such an avid pipe smoker that he was forced (by his wife) to smoke outside his house.

Living at the foot of the mountain, he decided to go up to the top of the peak one day, where he met a stranger who also smoked pipe. They started comparing and competing – one claiming to be able to smoke more than the other – and it became a pipe smoking contest. So they smoked and smoked until a table cloth of smoke formed around the mountain. It is believed that Van Hunks won the smoking competition, and his competitor actually turned out to be the devil. The mountain became Devil’s Peak and the regular clouds that cover it – Van Hunks tugging at his pipe.

Why all this smoke? Well I thought the legend fitted the concept of an outing that entails, well smoking.  If you are visiting Cape Town, why not try out the next best thing to smoking a pipe – smoke a cigar at one of Cape Town’s cigar bars or lounges.  Cigar Bars are automatically associated with luxury – leather couches, quiet, interesting conversations and an appreciation for the quality of the tobacco in the dark cigar.

One of Cape Town’s well established and luxurious cigar bar experiences is Van Ryn’s Distillery and Brandy Cellar. A visit here will take you back to the olden days of Stellenbosch, almost to the days of when the legend of Van Hunks and the Devil started.  The structure dates back to 1845 and the distillery to 1905. Here, brandy has been distilled and then mellowed and aged in oak barrels since then. Now what goes better with than a glass of fine distilled brandy than a cigar?

What’s more you could even enjoy a demonstration of how these brandy barrels are made, or take part in a chocolate and brandy tasting, before you gently puff away on a luxurious imported Cuban cigar, smoking up a storm in the Cape of Good Hope – and if you don’t smoke? Simply stick to the chocolate and brandy.
